Hello, Newbie here.

Any info on if GM did any 1965 396 El Caminos?. Ive found info on the 200 1965 Z16 396 Chevelles but nothing on '65 Caminos. The reason for asking is we have a '65 we have owned for several years,, has 396 fender emblems and an unknown big block, was factory 4 spd with a below dash tach, unlike the Z16s this has a 120 mph speedo. Any experts out there on this info? Thnx!!

Hi,
Based on an article I read in Hemmings Muscle Machines (May 2019 - Rats that Roared) the 396 was not available for the El Camino in 1965. For 1965 the L35 396/325 and the L37 396/375 were an option for the Chevelle. For 1966, the L35 396/325 and L34 396/360 became available for the El Camino.

The picture of the 65 Chevelle with an open bed, is not an El Camino, but a styling experiment used for advertising only. It was never manufactured as an item intended for public sale. Th 396 engine was available in the El Camino in 1965, but only as a dealer installed item. In factory installation of the 396 that year (1965,) was never approved.

My grandfather and I put a 396 out of a 68 or 69 Chevelle into my 65 El Camino, although I'm sure we weren't the first or last to do so. But... Just the same, I wonder, could it be the same car?

This is originally factory 4 spd, silver/grey, factory tach.
