Is there any difference between the starters? Are the interchangable? If not can one be installed by mistake and work for a while before going bad?
305 vs 350 starters

Hey Bubba , the starter on the 350 is alot larger and heavier when your under the car .... the starter for the 305 is smaller in diameter .... when you go by a auto parts store go ask them to show you the two starters ... same hook up connections , just size difference ... hey thanks --- have my 64 in the shop - something about it having the wrong starter and not long enough to engage properly - thus the occasional non-start "clunks" - still also trying to determine which motor it is -- 305 or 350 ---- hopefully the shop can tell me that also. bubba out ----

The Starters for a 305/350 should be the same size. I order a starter for a 78 C10 350 and change the nose cone for the smaller flywheel on my 79 305 and my 84 305 HO.

When I went from a 305 to a 400 in the '77 I bought new, I used the 305 starter until just a few years ago, when I put that engine in my Malibu and I went to a Power Master starter. So I didn't see any difference, although the starter in the 305 in the 80s may be smaller/different (??)

you can put a starter from the 4 cyl .nova engine on a 454 as long as the flywheel is the same dia. it will go on and work. it may crank slow due to a smaller wound motor but will engage correctly. for non ls motors there are two starter classes, stagered bolt ones for large flywheels and strait across bolt ones for the small flywheel. there are variations of both but they will all interchange within thier classes.if you are getting an ocational clunk it is a bad starter, the wrong starter wont engage even once
Yup I agree with the last post, I've gone through a couple starters and placed them on different engines and I bought 1 for a 350 and installed it later on a 305 and it worked just fine but then installed it on a different 305 and it wouldn't engage to the flywheel because that 305 was a smaller toothed flywheel making the diameter smaller than the original 350's 160-something toothed flywheel. Like the previous post said, they interchange you just have to find out if they're the same diameter flywheel if not you need a starter for that sized flywheel but the only differece I found in the two different starters was the little spinning thing that makes the flywheel spin, the whole starter and solenoid size and even the weight was pretty much the same fr the 150-something toothed starter vs the 160-something toothed. But then again like I always say I haven't seen much

And you can add to this-----AUTO and Manual transmissions---there is also a difference in the nosecones.
Manual trans should be cast iron----and a bit smaller nose
Auto trans uses an aluminum nose that is physically larger.
AT starter will not go into the bell housing for a manual trans

Have a noisy starter on my 86 305 and believe I might have created it by hitting the starter when the engine was running. Periodically now when I turn the key, there's an odd tinny noise when cranking, but engine still starts ok. Then the next time, their's a different noise when cranking like a deep noise, not the tinny sound or grinding , but an odd sound. Again, the engine starts. Do I pull the starter to see if the spring or bendix is the problem? The flywheel should not have been damaged when my first attempt to start while the engine was running, right. THanks, Nick
