Recently bought '64 with recent 305 motor. get 5-6 good starts then a clunk from solenoid area when turn key. Brand new battery. Sometimes after it sits a day or so it does turn over ---solenoid problem? wiring problem? Battery cables seem good. I replaced ground cable yesterday - but car is "dead" sitting in garage jsut getting older.

If the connections on the wires from the battery to starter are clean and tight and the battery is fully charged, the starter is probably bad.

X2 probably starter.

Is it a click or a clunk?

Thanks everyone. I suspect it is probably solenoid/starter --- suspected wiring but since there is a distinct clunk when you turn the key - juice is getting to the starter. have not been under the car but from feel only from top the wires on starter feel tight. As I said it cranks 5-6 times like normal with easy starts - then clunk.

It sure sounds like the solenoid is on it's deathbed. I just went through this. Change it out before you end up hitch hiking!
