My 81 el camino's differential gears are grinding. I've never done rear end work. From what I've heard it sounds like the spider gear because it only grinds when turning left and somewhat while driving straight, but no grind while turning right. Instead of replacing the gears I've been considering replacing the whole rear end. What other models are interchangeable with the el camino in case I have trouble locating an el camino to pull off of?

81 is a g body. You can find your rear end on Malibus, Monte Carlos, Olds Cutlass, Buick Regal, and I don't know about Pontiac. Some of these models will have an 8.5" rear end, so you will want to study the difference between the 7.5" and 8.5" so you know what you are looking at when you find one.

Good Luck!

If you have posi, you might try adding some posi lube.
Posi will make funny noises when turning.
