Finally got it all back together and it runs great! I found no reason for it to have been running the way it was. I have to assume I had some of the valve lashes pretty far out -- dunno.

Oh well. At least it runs again. Now I can take it to the paint shop.

HEY!!!! Congrats on solving the problem without know whut ya dun did!!! Sometimes that's the best way to solve a problem, but doesn't help with the knowledge base. I'm really glad ya got it going, and, more than likely, was valve lashes off some.

the bearing or wear plate is bigger than the cam,, it rides on the slotted part of the gear..
between the gear and the front of the block..

the back of the gear is what gets machined down for the bearing..

keep in mind tho,,
if you just shim (wearplate) the gear out you also change the wear point between the cam and lifter..
i would think??:dontknow: you would need to shim the gear to cam also :dontknow: ?? anyone ??
as said i never had that problem.. check the front of the block for wear..

i think your valves were too tight,,
i never liked that set all the valves at one time procedure..too much room for error,
when i set valves i do it one cylinder at a time..:texas:

I did that and then checked them at the #1 and #6 TDC points. Problem solved.

Yes, I could use them. I haven't had the bottom painted yet, as I've had so many other problems to contend with. I would greatly appreciate the clips.

I know the manuals show how to set all the lifter pre-load in two positions of the crank, but like JJLT1, I do one cylinder at a time. That procedure is likely OK with a stock cam, but maybe with a long duration performance cam, that procedure wouldn't work out very good.
