I’ve cleaned up a few spots on my frame before I drop the new engine in. I tried using Dupli-color rust barrier, but it just flaked off. I have some Rust-oleum engine enamel, can I spray that on the bare metal or do I need a primer first? If I need primer, what do you recommend?

The best is epoxy primer, but I don't think it is available in rattle cans since it needs an activator. You might look into the POR 15 product line. They will have something.

I was able to get the bad paint off and then cleaned with POR15 Marine Clean. Good old fashioned Rustoleum 7769 this time then finish with flat black. Thanks for the input, y’all!
