Broken cross pin bolt

294 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  464elky
Trying to take axles out, need c clips off to take said axles out. Got the bolt off realized that it has a break/fracture mark. All the threads are on the bolt but now the pin is rotating and would come out i dont have a welder and ez outs arent getting it. I have no idea what to do beside get another rear end. Magnets arent working either

C clips are sometimes annoying. I found the easiest way is to leave the tires on. Then I slowly spin the tire while slamming the axle in as far as it will go. Eventually, when you least expect it, it will fall straight out.

Soak it with PB. Tap it in with a metal hammer repeatedly, softly. It should bounce loose.

For the bolt? That hold the cross pin in

The bolt that holds the cross pin broke off?

From the description, sounds like the hold bolt was far too tight and stressed and it's possible it's warped the end slightly which is now affecting how the pin slides out because the hole is no longer perfectly round and Op can't get ahold of the pin to force it out. A really, really, really strong magnet might work....

Have you tried a small screwdriver with a strong magnet attached to it?

Given that the cross pin is 100 times stronger than the hold bolt, I would just turn the carrier so the bolt is inside the housing and start hammering the cross pin until it comes out.

Unless you can get a drill in that little bolt hole.

Or put a dab of glue on the end of a toothpick and let it dry to the broken bolt.

Doesn’t sound fun

Right now im trying the glue thing if that doesnt work ill be hammering it

Hopefully it works. There’s probably a more proper way to do this, but I have no idea. I hammered mine out when I got it stuck.

I may be missing something, but if "All the threads are on the bolt but now the pin is rotating" then the cross pin bolt is no longer holding the cross pin in place and you should be able to get the cross pin to come out the other side of the carrier (nothing should be holding it in place with the exception of a posi rear end where the spring pack is putting pressure on the side gears).

I’m assuming that he meant the broken bolt is spinning, but can’t pull it out given how small a bolt it is. But yes, if there’s a posi putting pressure on the pin, you’d rock one of the wheels back and forth while forcing the other tire to not spin, while also pushing the pin out.

Is he talking about the spider gear shaft or the retaining pin for it? I've had the spider gear shaft not wanting to come out beacuse the shims have eaten a groove into the spider shaft. real pain
