I think I blew a head gasket in my lil blue rocket.

The engine is a 302 from a 70ish Mustang, and with my freeway driving
head/valve failure would have been emminent anyway.

Being the opportunist that am---kinda half heatrtedly smelling around for a
90's something 5.0HO (heh heh heh)

Did locate a 5.0 out of a 90 Town car that was driven to the junkyard
just this last Thursday-----might be a good choice to build.
I just gonna require that any replacement engine has a roller cam.
Anyway---junkyard guy wants $200 for the engine---complete.
Might be better than looking for a HO.

I'm not a Fomoco guy, but I always thought the small block like a 302 was a good engine.
The only one I ever owned was the 221, in a '63 Fairlane, a mid-sized car. It was quite zippy for a little engine.

The 86 and up 302 should be rollers and the 94 and up 351 truck engines got the rollers.....Dan

I had a 78 Mustang II that i built an engine for. I took a 69 302 from a Mustang, bored it .30. Bought a set of Boss 302 pistons and rods and a steel crank. I then had the rotating assembly balanced. they cut the dome off of during balancing and also drilled the rods and shot peened them. I had a set of "K" motor heads in my shop and i had a 5 angle valve job done with triple springs and some good valves. I ordered a Clay Smith cam with Rhodes lifters, can't remember the but the lift was around .635 with a 312 duration. i used the stock 289-271 horse exhaut manifolds for more low end torque. I used a med rise dual plane holley intake with a 600 dbl pumper. The dyno at the fly wheel was 422. I installed a top loader and an 8" rear with 3.50 posi gears. in street trim i ran 12.90's. I put 100k miles on that engine and it would bang 7 grand without batting an eye. Never floated a lifter, bent a valve or broke a spring. If you've ever driven a top loader, you know that sometimes the 2-3 shift and be a little noisey. Especially at 5000 rpm. This was back in the late 70's/early 80's so gas and tires were fairly cheap. I usually got 9-10 mpg. I loved that little car. That engine would would make your lil 'chero run..

Had a toploader in my 65 Mustang years ago----yep a bit noisy

The Ranchero got a Borg Warner t-10. (have no idea why the difference in 2 cars that are virtually the same)
Not really bullet proof-----but enough for my intended uses.
Being how that lil blue car is my favorite runabout vehicle, I intend to keep it a bit
tame. Don't think I need much more than a stock HO would put out.
I'm gonna miss it on weekends when I'm home--til it gets fixed.

I'll probably get that Town Car engine-----I WILL get it if the crank is bored for a pilot bushing.

I really miss having the distrubuter in the front. i'm short and have a hard time reaching the one i have now. Maybe thats why I'm a Ford fan. My cousin and I put the roller motor from his 86 Mustang in the rear of a 68 Volkswagon Bug that we built a frame for. That was a smooth running engine. good luck with the build.
