Now I was running a MSD6A ignition box and a blaster coil to a factory points type dist.. So my dist. only had 1 wire going to it. In this set up the dist was only being used as a trigger. The box fires the coil which in turn sends voltage to the plugs.
Unless you bought a brand new dist. you might run this test to check it before you install it. Pay special attention to this!!!
NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING A CD IGNITION BOX, YOU MUST BYPASS IT BEFORE PERFORMING THIS TEST!
I didn't and the test wouldn't work right (bogus readings)
[FONT=Arial.Bold083.313][FONT=Arial.Bold083.313]UNILITE® TEST PROCEDUR.

NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING A CD IGNITION BOX, YOU MUST BYPASS IT BEFORE PERFORMING THIS TEST.

1.
Remove the cap and rotor. Turn the ignition ON and test.
voltage at the NEGATIVE side of the coil (black lead of.
meter to ground and red lead of meter to coil negative.
post). Voltage should read 12 volts.

2.
If battery voltage is present, place a credit card, driver..
license, business card or similar and block the photo.
optics of the module. The voltage should drop to 3 volt.
or less (1 to 2 volts). If this test is positive, then the.
module is working.

3.
If the test results are as follows.

a.
Voltage does not drop, module is open and must.
be replaced. This may have been caused by a power.
surge, high resistance in the plugs or plug wires, or.
improper ground. Possible charging system load.
dump.

b.
Voltage always stays below 3.0 volts. The module.
has been spiked by high voltage or amperage, lack.
of ballast resistor, or improperly wired.

c.
Voltage only drops to 3-4 volts could produce a weak.
spark.

Possible causes are.

.
Faulty charging system (stuck or shorted regula.
tor/alternator.

.
Faulty starting system (starter drag.

.
Non-suppression spark plug wires (copper or stain.
less core wires). Spark plug wires must be carbo.
core or spiral wound plug wires.

.
Large amperage alternator.

.
High amp stereo equipment.

.
CB radio.

.
Direct shorts in the ignition or electrical system.

.
Trying to start motor with battery charger hooked.

.
Welding on the vehicle with the distributor hooked.
up (disconnect 3-wire plug of the.
distributor before.
welding.

.
Faulty or improper ground of module.

If you must replace the module, replace it with Mallory.
Part No. 605.

If after completing the test and you are not sure of the re.
sults, call the Mallory Customer Service Department at.
(775) 882-6600.

Once it passes the (good) test then it's time to wire it.
So now you have a dist. that has 3 wires instead on one.
Here’s how I ran them.
Red from dist. to ignition from switch,
Green from dist. to white coming out of the MSD6A,
Brown to motor ground.
I then bumped the motor until the rotor was pointing at the 12:00 position for (reference)
When I stabbed in the new dist I made sure that the rotor was pointing at the same spot (12:00 position)
I swapped spark plug wires over 1 at a time to make sure none got crossed (shut up JPM DADDY!!!! :poke:)
You also have to remove and plug vacuum line from dist. advance if your Unilite don't use it.
Old Dist with a Blaster 2 coil

Checking voltage through new dist

Old dist and new dist note (you see the threads coming out of the side of the Mallory? Thats for a mechanical tach, The MSD6A box has a seperate place to hook up the tach wire to.

The new set up installed

Now I still have to (pretty it up) and I'm going to rebuild the carb this weekend
After I finished the install I turned the key and presto, she ran.:nanawrench: Now I did have to adjusted the timing a little but not much.
Here care some links to help

All in all a pretty simple thing to do :texas:

P.S. anyone want to but a (points style) dist???:poke:

That should be tied to the wire coming from the switch, yellow for one & white for the other one.

Imho MSD ignition systems are the absolute best. Ran nothing else on my very quick race machines for 30 years. Mallory is also nice stuff. The blaster and 6 al box deliver enough spark to perform electrocutions in death sentences. You can break the electrode off the plug and the plug will still spark. That is why nhra racers use nothing else.
