Hi all

Idle not in good shape. runs enough to get to A and B if needed but go slower than 5mph and it starts to stall out. electric choke on a 305... Just stuck open... nothing will close it. A little force gets it to come down but start the truck up and it's stuck open again. Just replaced the choke thermostat last year. Tried moving it but nothing happens. Unplugged it and had no effect on it either...makes me think the wire is cooked.. Maybe try with a voltmeter tonight.

Anyone had this issue before? Pain in the neck haha..

Just start? Or always been this way? Just get the car?

Electric choke is nothing more than a flat ribbon coil spring. Heat it up and it gets longer, pushing the choke open, when cool its shorter and choke is closed. The outside plastic is a dial, so can be set to change the tightness of the spring, making it open the choke sooner or later. If it's set wrong, or not hooked right, it can hold the choke open or closed permanently.

Only way you'll find out is pull the cover off. That's assuming it's a choke issue and the hanger or cam isn't frozen up or so tight it doesn't allow the choke to close when cold.

with the choke being open wont really cause a issue after the motor is warmed up,
i'd check for a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses,
they get old and crack, leak, fall off and cause a low / no idle problem..

as for checking the choke, youll have to open the throttle a little to
get it to move freely.. its kinda locked /held in place with the throttle closed..

throttle open 1/4, cold motor
see if it will move, exercise the linkage, see if its sticking..
and see which way it wants to spring to- open or closed..
see if the arm [red arrow] will go up and down freely..

see if the vacuum pot pulls in when running [blue arrow]..

could just be it needs adjusting after the T-Stat replacement..
take some pics, we may see something ..
