i went to get a price for custom made lines for my ac. and just the labor was going to be ~$500. they didnt know any prices for any parts they may need. does this sound right? this is the work they are going to do: change the dryer, make custom lines coming off the compressor, wire up the compressor, charge the system, and wire up an electric fan with a relay/switch to turn on when the ac compressor turns on. that seems like a lot of money for just laybor. i dont usually take my cars somewhere to get worked on. so i dont know if thats a fare price or what?

Sounds like they're chasing you with that price. Sometimes shops don't want/need the job so they give a high price.

he said he loves ac jobs, and we talked for a while about it. he seemed eager to do it. it just seemed a lil hight. when i googled ac shops in gainesville. only 2 shops popped up as shops that specialized in that sort of thing. i will prob check out the other shop tomorrow to get another quote, just dont have time today. but yeah its deffinately a possibility he was running me off.

Look in the phone book under hydraulics or call grainger sounds to me like they are a little crooked. You just need to find a place that has "swedging tools" that can do high preasure lines.

Most places today charge between $80-$120/hr for labor, so he was quoting 4-6 hrs labor. Not an unrealistic price for all the work he was doing for you, although probably a little on the high side just to protect himself.

Check for a local NAPA auto parts store, I know where i'm at they custom make hoses for us all the time from A/C to forklift hydraulics to tractor Hydrostat hoses. most of the time they are cheaper to make that way than ordering new ones.

I was thinking the same thing, here in Dallas the normal hourly rate is around $96...

and they did sound like they were going to do a bunch of stuff.

Being an old man now, and not wanting to keep re-doing stuff, I LIKE PAYING SOMEONE IF I CAN AFFORD IT - BUT WHAT I ESPECIALLY LIKE IS BEING TO GO BACK AND FUSSING IF IT STILL AIN'T RIGHT-

NOTHING LIKE A WARRANTY ON WORK PERFORMED - ask them what kind of warranty they are giving you on the $500 worth of work.....

thanks for the info everyone. ya its not in my budget to get that kind of work done. i will look around to see about those other options. but for now ill just have to use the trusty 2/60 ac for now.

I bought fittings and hose from vintage air. I cut and fit all hose then had local parts store crimp the fittings. Don

I have a hose crimper and make my own AC hoses. The sum of the materials is way less than shops charge for the finished product. I guess you're paying for their skills and the fact that they have the tools.
