I wonder what fuel mileage they got and where I could find one 8) today!
According to the October 1982 EPA Fuel Economy Estimates "Gas Mileage Guide", the 1983 El Camino and GMC Caballero received the following Federal MPG ratings:

3.8L 2Bbl w/auto - 19MPG city / 25MPG highway
5.0L 4Bbl w/auto - 17MPG city / 27MPG highway
5.7L FI Diesel w/auto - 22MPG city / 33MPG highway

The California MPG ratings were slightly higher.

The 5.7 Diesel was an Oldsmobile engine that had a 22.1:1 compression ratio. It was only offered from 82-84 and was not a popular option. I doubt that very many still exist.

My father had an olds with that engine in it. The money saved on fuel cost was spent tenfold in engine/electrical/batteries/grey hair/high blood pressure.......If you find one of these engines running, do the world a favor--set a THERMITE GRENADE ON IT!
Do it for my dad, he will apreciate the effort.
