What carburetor and jetting are you running? How do your plugs look? Where is timing set?
Are you trying to shift at 5500? Is trans fluid level right? Is shifter adjusted correctly?
What carburetor and jetting are you running? How do your plugs look? Where is timing set? Some things I noticed at the track yesterday. Still new to drag racing, but once I realized the track wasn’t getting prepped, I stopped running for time, and focused on launches.
1) I have to leave the gas pedal at 3/4 throttle or it starts lean misfiring.
2) My tranny shifts at 6k on all gears, but the engine runs flat after 5500, causing a lot of time lost. Power band falls instantly at 5500.
3) Tranny hangs at 6k for a full second before realizing it needs to shift.
4) carb runs great at 70 degrees, but starts popping once it gets cooler.
5) shift kit makes tires break loose at all gear changes. Need better tires.
6) Tranny doesn’t like hot-lapping. Lost 2nd gear on one of my runs, had to wait for tranny to cool down. Was normal after that.
Nothings been dialed in at all yet. What carburetor and jetting are you running? How do your plugs look? Where is timing set?

So does that mean initial timing is 18 and total timing is 36 after advance? Have you verified total timing with a timing light? What rpm is it at when you have full advance?Nothings been dialed in at all yet.
Out-of-box Edelbrock
Timing is 18-18-18 I think. Distributor isn’t curved yet. I set the timing that way so I’d remember what it’s set at.
Plugs are close, little lean.
Yeah, tranny needs to shift sooner, but the TV cable is where it should be, so I think I need new springs.
The car didn’t have a tach when I did the timing. 18 initial, 18 mech, 18 vacuum. However, I used 3 different timing lights, and got 3 different results, so I don’t trust timing lights anymore. So does that mean initial timing is 18 and total timing is 36 after advance? Can you go full throttle if you roll into it?
I would get the timing figured out first. I would think you want somewhere around 36 degrees total. The car didn’t have a tach when I did the timing. 18 initial, 18 mech, 18 vacuum. However, I used 3 different timing lights, and got 3 different results, so I don’t trust timing lights anymore.
You can roll into it as slow as you want, it won’t go that last inch on the gas pedal. Wondering if the 650 carb hits its peak, or just running too lean.
I’ll do Edelbrock’s recommended increase (8% richer) next time, along with different governor springs on the tranny and see if I can make it work.
I will when I find a timing light that doesn’t lie to me. Last time, I stuck a protractor to the cap and just measured it out. More reliable.I would get the timing figured out first. I would think you want somewhere around 36 degrees total.
Get that in the ballpark then tune the carb
