Is there a fuel screen that can be replaced on the gas tank pickup? If so is it a hard job? Are any special tools needed? Is there a gasket that needs replaced when removing the sending unit? Where can I buy that filter screen for the pickup? Thanks

Yes, there's a fuel screen on the bottom of the sending unit. You need a hammer and a screw driver, to tap the ring on the top of the fuel tank. I don't know how it's attached on a 87 El Camino.

IIRC, there are no replacements for those fuel filter socks attached at the sending unit pickup

If you do not want to pull the tank and sending unit, you can add a inline 3/8 fuel filter near the tank to filter out debris.
