I snagged a water temp gauge from "jpmdaddy" this past weekend at The Spring Fling meet and I want to install it but I have one major question.
I hear to use teflon tape/thread sealing tape but the directions say to apply the tape in the opposite direction of the threads. Is that correct?:???:
Also,would thread locker be better?

Have no idea what they mean by opposite direction. If you did, it would come off as you threaded it in.

Do NOT use thread locker, and do not tighten it too much. Best is pretty tight, then start the engine and tighten it if there is a leak. Check it when it gets warmed up as well.

Take a small brass wire brush and clean it up around where the wire connects so you get good contact.

Steelie, Most that I've seen use tape. I just changed out my head sender (which the new one didn't work), and the old one had teflon tape on it. I reckon I'll be putting it back in, as it at least read on my gauge and the new one doesn't.

Wrapping the tape "opposite" the threads is correct. If you wrap "with" the threads, as you tighten the sender, the tape will tend to slip and bunch up. If this all seems too complicated, you could always use a liquid type teflon thread sealant.

Just brought the mechanical water temp gauge in the house and stuck the sending unit in boiling water to see if it works well. Sure does and I also noticed it might fit inside my A pillar gauge pod. It's a tight fit but it might work.:bounce:

Temp gauge is installed. It went way easier than I expected. I thought I was gonna have leaks everywhere. I used the teflon tape as directed by wrapping the tape in the opposite direction of the threads. Nailed it the very first time!:2gunsfiring:
I know my gauges don't match and only the temp and oil pressure gauges work. Anyone have free white face gauges? lol
(The car was off so that's why there's no psi.)
