I am attempting to decode the engine code on my 327 engine to see if it has been replaced. From my understanding all engines are stamped with an engine ID code, consisting of assembly plant code, production date and suffix code. V8 codes for Chevrolet are found on the machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head. All the examples of the engine codes I found on the internet are 7 to 8 positions but mine is 6.

Mine is only 6 positions and reads F0I30S. Now the first position is the plant code and therefore the "F" is for Flint. The 2nd and 3rd positions are for the month and the 4th and 5th positions are for the day. What baffles me is the 3rd position is the letter "I" and not a numeric "1" . All the actual pictures of engine codes on the internet all use the numeric 1 and and not the letter "I". Also, the last position(s) is the engine suffix code and mine is an "S" and I do not find the meaning of the suffix code "S" anywhere on the internet examples.

So when I decode mine am I correct in assuming that mine was made in Flint on Jan 30 with the unknown suffix code of "S"? Does anyone know what the meaning is for the suffix code of "S"?

I did decode my transmission when I had it rebuilt last month and it is a matching transmission - Muncie 20, dated Nov 1964 & according to my cowl tag my El Camino was built the 1st week in Dec 1964. I also found that the 283 engine did not with a Muncie 20 transmission but with a Saginaw 4 speed so according to that finding mine was not produced with a 283 but with a 327.

Help is appreciated --- thanks

Appears my 327 engine is a replacement. I found a list of suffix codes at http://www.348-409.com/suffixsb.htm and has the suffix code "S" listed as a 327, 250HP, Powerglide

Thanks for your help!!
