The other day I was on E-Bay looking at an El Camino and couldn't find a way to decode the VIN. I found some sites with general decoding but notihng that told me every digit.

Any links?

You seem to have too many letters and numbers. Your 81 VIN should not have 16 characters. Are you reading it from the VIN tag at the bottom of the windshield?

These links will shed some light.

Custom is a level of associated options.
Example for 1970-71, Base is more affordable level.
Custom is a higher level.

http://chevellestuff.net/1971/vin.htm
VIN=136801L157043
13680=Chevelle El Camino Custom 2 door pickup
1 = Chevrolet
36 = Malibu for Chevelle, Custom for El Camino 8 cyl
80 = 2 door pickup

1 = 1971
L = Van Nuys, California plant
157043 = Sequential Production Number

The trim tag info provided is not enough to work with.

Thanks for the info that's really great . We are learning a lot about this car !! Which is great because we didn't want to enter into the same and find she's a bitzer! This site has been so helpful it's just fab!
So I can pretty much ease my mind that she's not a bitzer -phew we were a little concerned there !!
