Hey everybody,

Noticed something on my VIN. My elky was built in the 4th week of December,and my elky is an 84 and the owner origional owner first wrote info down the owners manual in January of 1984. My question is was mine built on the last week of December of 1983 but sold as an 84 because it was so close to 1984?? Only thing i can think of?

I think most manufacturers tool up for the next years models by late summer. They started selling 2012 cars in Oct or Nov of 2011 and have done it that way for years.

Okay thanks! So mine is technically an 83 but is an 84.

The VIN letter will tell you exactly what it is and that is all that matters as that is what everyone goes by such as manufacturer, DMV, insurance etc. If it shows a D then it would be an 83 if it shows the letter E then its an 84 no matter the build dates.

sept is the breaking point for model years. sept and later are the following year.sept 83 to aug 84 are 84 s. that is how it was when our cars were built. now days they call them what ever they want to

Yeah as was said above anything from September on is the next year. But, when they introduce cars "early" it can get a little confusing. Sometimes they'll launch a car in the spring as the next years model. So that might say 4/12 for a build date but actually be a 2013. But keep in mind when that happens there was no 2012 of that model.
My 99 tahoe is another example. Built 10/99 it's still a 99 as the new body style wasn't available until 01/00.

Apparently the law says that if a vehicle meets all specs for the upcoming year you can call it this year or next year. It can be built as a year model until the end of that calendar year. Thus, December 1987 built Grand Nationals are still 87's, but my August '06 built Tahoe is an '07. Anyone have an '88 Cutlass (RWD) or Monte Carlo? What build date are they? I think that there were '88 Montes built before some '87 GNs.

If the 10th digit of your VIN is an "E," you have an '84. This can be a little confusing to those who don't understand the industry. Keep in mind that although the Mustang came out in 1964, there are no 1964 Mustangs; they are all 1965's. Another example is the Chevy Citation, which was billed as "the first car of the 1980's." They were first sold in April of 1979.
