Ok so i dont see any leaks running alittle rough dont see smoke but i am losing oil almost a quart in less then 500 miles Its a 73 350. Dont think anything has been done to it. What do u think time to rebuild?

Oh and i just replaced valve covers and gaskets did not help

If the rear crank seal leaks a bit, you may not notice it coming from the bottom cover on bottom of the flywheel/flexplate, when running down the road. High mileage engines usually lose oil through worn valve guides and valve stem seals.
A new/rebuilt long block from a rebuilder would be less money than what you can rebuild it for yourself, and new long blocks are out there for a decent price too, like from Jegs etc..

CHECK-CHECK your transmission modulator valve if not working right it will suck out oil from the motor---no spots on ground--no smoke--no oil NO GOOD --My $.02

If the modulator is bad the engine will suck transmission fluid but the modulator can't suck oil from the engine.

I once found an intake gasket damaged where it was supposed to seal the ports, that allowed oil to be sucked into one cylinder and the engine ran rough due to the vacuum leak. Something else to check.

A quart in less than 500 miles and you're not seeing any blue smoke?

Its leaking out somewhere. Wash the complete engine, go drive it and then inspect.

What Mario said.....the oil has to be going someplace........a quart is quite a bit of oil...

I did the cleaning and cant find a leak when modulator is bad u get lots of white smoke
Think i am just going to rebuild it also it still has all the smog stuff on it. If that makes a difference

you are of course right----where would the transmission get suction DHHHHH Sometime the lights are on but-----:brainfart:

Pop off the engine/transmission inspection cover and then fire up the engine. The oil may be leaking from the rear main and puddling up in the cover, then when you drive it seeps out through the little drain hole.

I would also check your distributor. Many forget to replace the distributor to intake seal, and oil WILL leak from there. Maybe your dizzy is loose, causing oil seepage and rough running?

well put it in the garage to get to pull the motor and there is oil on the floor ----so i guess this was a good idea

well sent the motor in the have it inspected and one of the heads had a crack in it ----so found where the oil was going -- so mystery solved ---should have it back this week finish cleanand painting the engine bay and move on from there
