If you wish to change your points dist. to a HEI, you need to replace the primary wire, that used to go to the coil. The wire is a steel core wire, that reduced the voltage from 12V to 6V to keep from frying the coil and points. Cut the wire as close to the firewall as you can, and splice in a heavy copper core wire. I bought a used HEI at a salvage yard, complete, with hold down for $35.00. Previously, I had a slight hesitation on take off. I rebuilt the carb. but the hesitation was still there. After changing to the HEI, the hesitation is gone. To test an HEI that is out of the engine, connect a battery charger ground to the dist. housing, connect a pig tail to the + side of the HEI cap, and connect the + battery charger lead to the pig tail. Connect a plug wire and plug to any of the terminals, turn the gear by hand (careful, you can get popped), and whenever it gets to the terminal with the plug, it will fire.
