I cant seem to find what emblems Im supposed to have on my el camino anywhere. I just picked up my 71 El Camino with the 396(402)...I was told it is the factory motor and not engine swap. My confusion is that somebody pulled the correct emblems off and replaced it with some very cheap SS emblems that arnt the correct design even if it was an SS. The vin on the is 134801B....any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to NECOA, Forrest. First, there is nothing on the car that will document it as a SS. When you find things like wrong emblems, it's usually a red flag. The Super Sport package was put on the V8 Custom El Camino. The VIN for that starts with 13680. I will need to check some info I have but I am thinking 13480 was a six cylinder.

Thanks for the welcome! I bought the car knowing it wasn't as SS so there's no disappointment there. I looked into the VIN...134 is a V8, 133 is the L6.

So it should be El Camino with a 396 badge under it on the fenders only right? Yes I know I've got the wrong bezels as well as a few other things...in the process of fixing that. :smileyb:

Cast number on the block is 3999280 and noticed a 72 stamp on the passenger side rear, the closest i can find is 3999290 which would make it a 1972 motor and not the original motor for the car. Not to worried about it though, its still a 402. Which leads me back to my original question, does anyone know what the correct badges would be on the car?

Probably just misread the number on the block...dirty motor + flashlight + mirror = fail

Looks good in the pic's Forrest. I had a 71 that I bought and built a 402 for it. Had the same block suffix "CTB", you are correct about the 72. When you say "bezels" do you mean the turn signal lenses? If so, I would want to change those as well. The mix and match with 71/72 parts makes it look odd. To question #1. Are you wanting to put the SS badging on it? From what I have read, the base model could be ordered with a 402 as a non SS big block. Of course the badging would be different. It has the SS hood so I would be inclined to go with the SS emblems, if it were mine. That would be the grille SS, the fenders have "el camino", underneath that is the fender SS and under that, the 396. Then on the tailgate is a one piece SS 396. Because it has the standard SS hood and not the optional cowl induction hood, I would not put the "cowl induction" emblems on the hood, as it is an obvious error.
