My 1968 makes the awful squeaking and chattering noise at the back window whenever I hit a bump in the road. Something is rubbing when it shouldn't, and it drives me insane.

So how exactly does the rear window trim come off and how do I install it back on? And what do I use / how do I reseal the back window?

Any other tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C5fdKFMkRI This video does the removal OF THE TRIM the way I have done it. There are other videos with slightly different techniques. Take half an hour to review a few of the videos and see what will work for you. Another good video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63nXHjemRZk Front is similar to rear.

To remove the window I pushed a thin piece of solid steel wire thru the sealant and with one person inside and another outside I saw the wire around the perimeter of the window. Breaks the seal and window will push out from the inside. Wrap the ends of the wire around a small screwdriver to use as a handle to pull on the wire. It WILL cut bare hands. DO NOT use the screwdriver as in the video - 90%+ that you will break the window. Don't lose the clips they MAY be loose - mine are painted to the body :yell:

There is a ribbon sealer available - That is how GM did it originally. Nowadays some folks use a caulking tube of urethane sealer ( like on new cars) . Investigate pros & cons of each.

To reinstall trim, you just lay it in place and press with the heal of your hand. It is not hard if you are careful

I can highly recommend the urethane (3M 08690) over butyl tape. It'll last a lot longer. You can get the urethane from an auto glass shop. When I asked my local shop about that they just went ahead and removed an reinstalled the rear window for me for $50. They removed the window, scraped off the old sealant, primed with 3M single step primer, and resealed it with 3M 08690 urethane. They showed me what they did while they were doing it. Took about 30 minutes.

Thank you Trevor and JJ. Sounds like the 3M urethane is the way to go. I'll probably end up tackling the window this weekend.

Thanks for the advise!! :bigups:
