First Generation
I'll take the bait. As a one time owner of a 1959 red & white EL Camino with fender skirts, a 283 V8, a PowerSlide transmission, and power steering, I disagree!
The 59 was like driving a small aircraft carrier as it floated over the road. The flat fins appeared as the landing deck of the ship in the rear view mirror. The seat was wide enough for 3 large guys to sit there without being to cozy. It rusted so quietly that we could even hear the radio. While not fast, but it was smooth. I even took to the antique drags once at Desoto Speedway and lowered the tail gate and looked good while loosing to some loud hopped up Chevy of some non memorable grandmothers body style.
Yep I like the 59, but the 1960 just didn't have that special flair. The second generation Elky's where during my out of country military time and didn't get in my blood. The third generation editions where cool, but I was busy with street rods and really old antique cars and never got around to owning one. All the fourth generation Elky's were to big and heavy looking for my taste.
Then I bought my 79 Caballero and loved it, but didn't get much support on the home front for my "1/2 car / 1/2 truck." After a few years it had the bad luck of leaking on my new brick driveway and was sold at a cruise-in one night. Almost immediately I missed it and started watching for a good one. It had to be rust free, original and good colors for the heat of Florida. After about 6 years of watching I bought the current 5th Generation 1981 Cream & Champaign Conquista, but I still would rather have a first generation 1959.
