I finally cleared some engine stands in my garage.
I have a couple engine blocks that need inspection and bore measurements.
They have both been sitting in a garage for years and have some rust in the cylinder bores...they are just blocks with cam bearings installed.
I want to clean up the cylinder walls and main caps and get some measurements.
Fine emery cloth?

use a cylinder hone for the cylinders (spray with WD40 while doing this)
and you can use some very fine emery cloth on the main and rod caps/and the crank journals if you need to ,you should be able to measure the crank with out cleaning.

A "glaze breaker" or "dingle ball" hone may work just fine and do the least damage.

X2 on the ball hone,,, I use tranny fluid to hone with,, there is honing fluid but it aint cheap,,to clean the bores and remove rust ATF works well for me,, I have a small ball hone for the lifter bores as well,, Matty man

If the bores are honed, some spray detergent will help clean out the fine particles from honing. Seems like just wiping bores with solvent doesn't get the stuff cleaned out of the hone marks very good.
