that distributor can be run with just a resistor and coil,
its a magnetic pickup, mechanical advance, no vacuum..
so you can bypass the MSD for testing..

Mallory's are real finicky about clean power and a good distributor ground..

x2
check the ignition power in run and crank/start..
or the quick test will bypass the ign switch..

Tried going from distributor to coil as per Mallory instructions, still used the msd input power wires to coil, same symptoms as before. It will spark when car key goes from off to accessory once (which i know is odd)then no spark when cranking over.

if your still running the original ignition switch, it may not power the coil in crank..
back in the old days they had a yellow wire that went from the "R" terminal
on the starter solenoid to the coil+ that bypassed the resistor, for full 12v during crank..

I assumed someone all ready had a fix or work-around for that installed..
see anything else on the usually pink wire to the coil+ from the ignition switch ??
sometimes they add a relay, or just power the coil from another source..

Right now red and black wire from coil to mds 6al output, mds black input to ground, red input wire to a switch on the dash in line from ignition switch. I have not found a resistor yet.

yes, I would un-plug the msd box from the coil tho..
pump 2 times, let off the throttle, turn the key, 2-3 seconds when cold,
youll have catch it when it fires, keep it idled up a little with the throttle..
I usually just bump the starter for a second when there warm..

8-9 volts would be better for long term, its easyer on the distributor parts,
but just for a crank/fire test its ok..

Old school 6al but it passed the msd tests. Think it is the mallory breakerless ignintion. It isnt sending asignal when reluctor passes.

is it adjustable?? can you set the pickup gap closer ??
any wiggle or slop in the distributor shaft ??

never used a Mallory magnetic pickup setup,
but I have a Mallory Uni-lite, Optical Photo-cell pickup 30yrs old still works..

She lives, magnetic breakerless ignition failed. Found a MSD Distributor locally and fired right up after that once i found new spark plug wires.

Thanks for all of the input.
