I guess that you can believe my disbelief? :) I couldn't believe that they would do it like that. That would never happen in NY. Best Regards
I am happy to see that you now believe me and I thank you for that. Here's a little more of the story:

Once I got the second letter stating that my Camino had been roadside smog scanned and found in non-compliance, I took the letters and the Air Resources board engine change documentation to the DMV. Having owned two motorhomes where the VIN year did not match the model year, I suspected the computer system would allow the model year to be different from the VIN year. From there, I needed cause to make the change and they accepted the smog profile problem as a valid reason. So, it is an 80 registered as a 70, but in spite of that, it is a long way from the value of a similarly clean 1970 LS-5 or LS-6.

Like any state agency, lots of things can be done if the employees have a way to justify their actions - or cover their butts. In my case, I could not have done it without the letters and the BAR certification. As a 1970 it is exempt from smog checks, which is good, but for all other purposes, I consider it a 1980, not a 1970.

Insurance is a whole other ball game. Vehicles this old, be it 1970 or 1980 can no longer really be valued by Bluebook. If the vehicle is totaled, you are going to have a real fight on your hands getting anything more than a minimum payout. The insurance company will justify it by pointing out that the premium you paid was based on average market value. So, if your Camino is nicer or more valuable to you, you need to have a conversation with your insurance agent about a stated value policy. They'll need to inspect the vehicle and you won't get much argument about value, because they'll happily charge you a premium based on the value you've chosen. I have my Caminos on a Collector policy with a stated value, which ensures that I'll be paid what we agreed they were worth, but I am paying a higher premium accordingly.

I can't believe that it costs so much to register them out thar in that ferign country.LOL Is that per year? ours is only like $25.00 a year :nanawrench:

What a train wreck of a thread, all I wanted to know was the highest known VIN# for 1987.

I, too, noticed that the question was never answered. Yes, I know there are no '88s.

So, what IS the highest VIN, the "Last El Camino"?

Highest vin# for 1987

I have researched and came up with this --- Production sequence started at 100001 according to gmhertigecenter.com and according to wikipedia 13743 El Camino's were produced -- so that would make the highest vin# 113744. I went to chevelles.com site and they agreed with wikipedia -- the totals for El Camino were 13743 and they also listed 1882 as GMC Cabellero for a grand total of15625. I further researched the gmheritagecenter.com site and in the production of the el camino they list it as an El Camino/Caballero. This information would lead me to believe that there was only 13743 El Camino/Caballero's produced thus making the highest vin# 113744. There was 420 leftover when GM quit production/selling and they were sold in 1988 but that didn't make them 88's. Personally I think they never made it out Mexico. Also in 1985 all prodution of the El Camino/Caballero was shifted to Mexico until 1987. I hope this helps to answer your question -- What is the highest vin# for 1987 El Camino's. Thanks

79 EL CAMINO CUV

I think I saw Bigfoot driving one on I95 the other day.
To put another factless rumor to rest, that wasn't Bigfoot. That was my ex.

I think there were 14 of them.
Only 2 remained in tact. One for the Museum and I remember one being raffled for Spina Bifada. Info is in my old Vette Views magazines of 1984.
