I can get an already made set of skins from the El Camino Store for $284.00 or I can take the seat to an upholstery shop and pay about $500 plus to have it done.

My question is, how hard is it to put a new set of skins on myself? do I need any special tools?

Check the prices at www.honestcharley.com .Also find out the shipping charges from the Elcamino store. I recently bought a straight bench set of seat covers from Honest Charley for $222+$21 for shipping. Better to keep the money in your pocket than theirs.

I did my own. I had buckets. should be the same work. You will need hog rings and hog ring tool. They actually gave me one tool and a bunch of rings with my upholstery kit. Its not too hard. newseat.png

When you replace the skin is it advisable to do the foam cushions at the same time? What about the springs? Seems like my cushions don't provide much cushion anymore.

I like the look of this skin for my 1971, $130 shipped seems like a steal.

Foam cushions aren't cheap though...

I replaced the foam in mine. It was worn out. you have an older car and the seats are probley a little different with the springs. You might have a broken spring when get everything off. they are fixable if you do. I have and old 70 Caddy that had some broken springs and i had them fixed.
