Weatherstripping options?

382 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Wayne Parrish
Was wondering if I could use a universal door and roof rail weather strip like the ones found on Amazon? Or do I have to use the oem? Just trying to save a few bucks and the universal ones are much lower in price but not sure if they work with a 79 Camino. Thanks

In my opinion nothing works as well as O.E.M. Repopers aren't allow to use the same materials and processes that the O.E.Ms used. That being said. Buy the direct fit. They still will present enough trouble to seal against wind and such.:)

I used Steele Rubber products for mine. I don't know if they are as good as they used to be.

I have always used Steele and been VERY happy with it. You're throwing your money away buying house type. ALSO,take your time with it and if you have a buddy thats done it, get their help. A few tricks of the trade will help.

I'm with the Steele users, tried Soffseal and the fit isn't near as good.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up getting the oem fit. Am currently removing the leftover stripping from the rails. Anyone know a hack on getting fit out easier or just keep at it with a blade/ flathead until it's all out? Also, to re apply the stripping, what adhesive is needed? Same question for reapplying the roof rail. 3m doubleside tape for the rails? Thanks in advance. I can attached photos tomorrow if necessary.
I used 3M weatherstrip on my 57 Pontiac .
Did u use 3m tape to reapply the rails? I have the oem fit weatherstripping but am wondering how to bond it to the rails.or can I just press the lip into the rail lip edge without adhesive?

Use 3M black weatherstripping adhesive available at most parts stores, Amazon, etc.

Thanks alot man I ll pick some up today
I have not replaced any on my 86 so I can't give you solid help. If nothing else call Steele and get some first hand help. I am sure there are many on our site that are pros at this also.
