Hello All,
What is the best aftermarket carb for a basically stock 396/402 big block? I am thinking about replacing my external choke quadrajet. Thoughts?
Thanks,
RTT Todd

..you know, picking out a carb. is like choosing a good beer, there all tasty, and they quench your thirst. Myself, I love the Q-jet that's on my big boy, once there set up, they can run circles around the competition.but, I too been looking at carbs lately and I'm leaning towards "Holley" ..everybody's got those "Eddy" carbs, there ok, but for a big block, yea,go holley if you're going change out carbs..:alc:

I have looked up my carb and the numbers indicate a 1980 chev 4 barrell automatic. The second row of numbers on the carb are 0570 CPM and I can't find anywhere what they mean. I think it has to do with the choke maybe .Anyone got any ideas ?

For normal driving around town my truck runs pretty good but to me smells a little rich at times. However, if you floor it and open the secondaries it stumbles a little before it gets going. I just want good overall throttle response for my basically stock motor.

I'd rather be rich than lean for best overall engine operation. What do your spark plugs look like on the white internal electrode porcelain? A light tan to light chocolate color works best for me.

Like the others have said you already have the best carb..

Pull the vacuum hose off the secondary diaphragm and peen the end of the tubing closed a little more.. That's how you adjust a Quadrajet secondary flapper, leave the spring alone as long as it pulls the flapper shut gently..

Hi Todd,
I have the same 396/402 in my 70 Elkie. A rebuild is OK if you want to stay all stock. Make sure you get someone well known to do the rebuild.

Since my 70 is not stock, I went with the Holley 4150 Aluminum Street Avenger 670 cfm. I got it from Summit Racing. They talked me into the larger 770 cfm at first but it was way too big for my engine. That is when I changed to the 670 cfm.
It works great starts every time. I just hit the gas one time and it cranks right up.

I am sure these other people do quality work on carbs,BUT, you have so many VERY happy people on this site that have had Mountain Man Carbs and Injection do their work ! It is very hard to ignore the fact that all of these people are happy with their work. He will match up what you need .:patriot:

Could not agree with Wayne more. Mountain Man rebuilt my carb to my driving habits. At 250,000 miles of flawless use.. it is now time for another trip to Arkansas so Ted can work his magic.. they can't be beat.

in my opinion, the Qjet is the best street/performance carb ever devised...I'm not at all a Holley fan. the running rich or stumbling can be cured by a good carb man.

that said, if I were ever going to change, there's no doubt in my mind I would go with FiTech. I now know 3 people who have made the move, I have driven all 3 before and after - the improvement is enough to make me consider doing it on my Elky.

I'm with the pack. Q jet all the way. Been building engines since '85, and they are the best overall. Holley, so so, floats collapse often, and not friendly to climate changes. Edelbrock, pretty good. A close friend and gear head swears by Carter, if you can get the older ones since they have made choke changes. If you have those issues, it may not necessarily be the carb. Many variables to tuning. Just my two cents.....
