Is there a way to remove the speedometer cable from the speedometer, without taking the dash apart?

Is there a way to push the clip on the speedometer so to pull the cable off of it, without taking the dash apart?

In my experience the instrument cluster is not very hard to take apart that is about all you have to do. there are multiple walk throughs on the forum.

Thank you. I've had it apart before. I thought I had put it in without taking the dash apart.

I have been able to reach up and push the clip while I also using a couple fingers to wiggle cable.
It was tight.

Thanks. I'm having problems reaching it with my fingers. I guess I'll just have to take it apart and pull the speedometer.

I took the speedometer out and the cable is now disconnected. I need to check the other end a see what's holding it from coming out. I was trying to pull it up, but should pull it out under the car. Then probably push the new core up from the transmission area. I plan to spray graphite in the cable sheath before pushing it in,then spray it again after it's in.

Is there anything else that keeps the core from coming out?

Should the new core be put in with the cable sheath in the El Camino or with it out?

got a pic?
do you mean the plastic cover on the inner cable ??
did the old inner cable have one ??
is the diameter on the new inner the same as the old one ??

I usually just buy the new inner and outer together,
pull it out the top side, grease it up real good, and slide it back in..

I used to buy the replacement inner cables and do it like that,
I think I ran into a different manufacture design problem once
and it would not work, but cant remember, not sure what your problem is..

the inner cable usually slides in purty easy, unless the inside of the
outer is damaged when the inner wads up like sometimes..

Thanks JJ. The problem is the speedometer isn't working. When I tried turning it with my drill in reverse the cable unraveled by the transmission. I have a new core, that's a Balkamp by NAPA. So I thought I'd put it in and see if I could make it work. I hope it will work so I can try the cruise control. I figured I would have to get a shorter one due to the fact that it's a bit long. Currently when the cable comes out of the firewall it goes forward past where the steering column slides into the yoke, then goes back to the transmission.

if the inner wont come out ,, the outer may be damaged beyond repair..
a said they do wad-up sometimes..

the inner cable only comes out from the speedo end..
if you can figure out which way its twist goes ??
twist it one way it gets smaller diameter, the other way it just wads up more..
I think you would turn it clock-wise from the speedo end??
OR maybe it was put together backwards from the start..

maybe
and spin it with the drill from the speedo end and pull it out while turning it..

I cant say I would trust it after it wont come out without a lot of force..
you may be replacing the inner and outer next week anyway..

Thanks JJ, thank you for your help. I'll pull the whole thing out tomorrow and probably order a new one. Thanks again.
