Not really an Elk question as more a CHevy one. Just bored and have been thinking while working on my ride that it seems that every other motor co. has nick names for their motors. I.E. The flat, knuckle, pan, shovel, block, and fathead Harley motors, the Boss, Winsor and Cleveland mills of FOAD :p , Mopar's HEMI, and while Allison and Rolls are noit really pet names they are household names if they appeared in a Jag or others like they did they are still refered as thier motor, Allison Jag has quite a resale value. Other than the rat motor are there any pet names for CHevy powerplants? Just BS'n.

The Small Block is know as the Mouse the Rat being its big brother. as far as I know that is pretty much it. BTW the Original Hemi was know as the Elephant. The small blocks Dodge is producing now was never part of the original Hemi engine like they want everyone now days to believe.

The original Corvette engine was called the "Blue Flame Six". With a puny Powerglide transmission.
Really.

I seem to remember Big Block Chevy motors being called the Semi-Hemi which was based on it's canted valves before they were called Rat motors. And as far as the 409 the Beach Boys couldn't have said it any better, it didn't need a catchy name, 409 was it. :) Cleveland is in Ohio...Winsor is a castle in England...the Boss is whose butt you kiss...and Wedge or something like that is what your older brother gives you when he attempts to pull your underwear up over your head. What in the hell is so catchy about those?

But those cute little engines made such great blender motors! And then of course, you just had to put something back in its place...like a nice 350 with about 400hp and a Muncie M-22 with a 58 Olds spooled rearend! 8)

Of course and that is why they called it the "Elephant". It was the thing to beat in the 60s. And probably still demands a lot of respect for the few that are left. I am not a big Dodge fan but..... That motor was killer. The new 5.7 L "hemi" that they have are small blocks with nothing close to the obscene amount of power that the Original Hemi Motors produced.

But now you can take a SBC and turn it into a 500 or more Horse Power monster. For a small block that is good streetable power without NOS just a good tuned carb.

Times have changed the engines in our chevys from what they were in the mid to late 60s to now. They just keep getting better. :D

In the late '50's,mopar had the Golden Commando high block, started out as a 350,then as a 361,next 383,and 413.Some of these engines had cross ram manifold that put a four barrel carter carb out over the valve covers.Early '60's saw saw a low block 383 called a Commando. The high block had the 426 Wedge Stage 1,Stage 2 and the full race Stage 3.By the mid to late '60's Mopar had the 426 Hemi,425 hp(insurance rating) and the 383 low block 335 hp.The high block became 440 cu in,350 hp or the TNT 375 hp.
