I have a few questions. What size speakers originally came in the boxes that hung on the sides of the 1972 El Camino? Can I take the old speakers out and put new ones in the boxes?

The only factory speakers that I am aware of are either a center dash speaker, with a mono radio. Or pair of speakers at the ends of the dash, with a stereo radio. Could be yours were added later. If so, most likely they would be replaceable with a modern speaker.
Well believe it or not there were speakers that came as an Option in the 1972 Elky That were hung right by the seat belt holder on the top of the area right beside the door near the seats. They were boxes. Not sure what size they were though.
