I recently received my January 2013 issue of Hemmings " Muscle Machines " and inside is a great article on the Rochester E4MC carburetor that is standard on all 1981 or newer GM vehicles with a V8. This of course is an electronic carburetor and works with the computer, so often many of us have issues adjusting the settings for proper performance.

The article explains how they work, and speaks very positive on these carbs however, the adjustments are not for the novice. If you're having issues dealing with your carburetor, then I suggest you grab the January 2013 issue and read up on the details. There seems to be a shortage of mechanics these days that can actually work on these carbs and knowing what and how they function can certainly assist you in locating a competant mechanic. Well worth the money spent on the magazine if you have a quadrajet in a 5th, gen El Camino.

the biggest problem with the elect q jet is you cant get the calibration tools anymore, even the chevy dealer was no help. they are a good piece and work well. but for the cost of a good rebuild on one can cost in excess of 400$ and by good rebuild i mean all shaft bores rebushed and sealed, all new electronics, tps,mc solenoid, choke coil, new metal float, custom calibration, well plugs changed to screw in plugs.you are about 1/2 the cost to convert to a factory efi system useing junk yard parts except for sencors.trust me i like carbs but i love my efi too, starts instantly in 0 degree weather and always runs the same

Believe the carbs that are computer controlled (feedback carburetors) are E4ME
I had a "85 and now own a "87, the carbs are E4ME.

The calibration tools were made by Thexton (or maybe it was Textron??), and consisted of four tools in one, all intended to drive the various adjustment screws. A piece of crushed brass hobby tubing can be made to work with some of these, maybe all. Once I understood how to adjust mine, I found it really easy and simple to get my carb working properly again. An exhaust gas analyzer (CO2 and HC) is a big help, too. When these carbs are properly tuned with a GOOD O2 sensor (not a cheapy Bosch), you can get great gas mileage as well as performance. I had a fullsized '88 Caprice wagon with the Olds 307 engine that consistently achieved 21 - 22 mpg on the highway, pretty good for a carbureted heavy boatanchor (in fact, I called it the Blue Boat Anchor, BBA for short). In the winter months, though, that decreased to 12 - 13 around town and 17 - 18 on the highway. At 225K miles, it used zero oil, ran mid 18s at the strip, and could break the rear tires loose on most pavement. I went through 3 200-4Rs before body rust condemned it to the Yarde at around 350K miles.

the 2 most critical adjustment are the lean stop position of the mc solenoid and idle air bleed screw. both must be set correctly any time the carb is disassembled or all other adjustments will be off .textron is the co. that made the tools which they no longer do.i have called them personally trying to get the tools, even mountain man carbs couldnt get them for me.i loaned mine to a friend who claimes he lost them. but have found a complete set of them from a friend who worked at a parts store who bought boxes of stuff when they went out of business and they were in them. if you have the tools dont loan them because they are not replaceable.

If I just took the top off the carb and replaced the TPS and gaskets will that through off the adjustments? Just thinking they said to double up on the gaskets so that would change the spacing does that effect the settings?

textron THX-370

THIS IS WHAT I FOUND.
???????????

Would you believe that after some long searches, I have come across a quantity of brand new still in original blister pack Thexton carb tools. These tools are necessary for adjusting the CCC Quadrajet. Tool 370 has been discontinued and no longer available. Only 11 sets available. Please contact me at jtm225@optonline.net. Cost is $15.00 a set (362 and 370) including postage and handling to the lower 48 states. Money orders only.

This article was written by Ray T. Bohacz who claims to have made a decent living tuning these carbs when they first came out, he seems to know all the " Little " tricks to adjust without the required tuning kit. In reading the article I found Ray to be very knowledgible in these carbs, and the article shows in depth with photos how and what to adjust on either the E4ME & E4MC ( olds heat type choke ).

Again, I just wanted to share with you guys that this is a very good article, and one that I'll keep for future reference because of the depth of explaination in operation & adjustments. I doubt there are very many mechanics that have this sort of experience in the local shops however, there seems to be a lot of guys out there that can work these carbs to meet or exceed the performance of a EFI change-over, and keep things original.

yes removeing the cover will change the adjustments so will adding a second gasket.the tps will be off along with the rich stop and idle air bleed adjustment since these are all referanced off of the bottom of the carb bowl
