Well, that clears thing up. :???:l

Again, no 1987 were sold as 1988 models. The year in which the vehicle sells has nothing to do with the model year. NOTHING
A vehicle with a 1987 VIN cannot be sold as a 1988 model. Once the VIN plate is attached to a vehicle it cannot be removed and another one put on, that's criminal and no auto OEM would dare risk that. End of story.......I don't understand why some seem to thing GM would screw customers by re-branding a old model with a new model VIN. Maybe they can do that with 2011 models that don't sell, rebrand them as 2012's. If they did it with 1988's, they would do it with every year but its not legal. The OEM has to furnish a Manufactures statement of origin when the vehicle is built and that is a legal document required by the states to issue a tittle. Those are automatically generated when the car is built and cannot be altered.

Here are what GM says were the El Camino model years.

Each link opens a pdf file with model year nfo. Note-No 1988 model listed which is proof none exist....

It's all so confusing, because I for sure have seen 1988 Monte Carlo SS's in person, yet they were identical to the '87, so then that makes you think they could have done it to the EC as well, and as far back as I can recall, even selling auto parts in '92 there was always a listing for '88 El Camino. How did that get started?

But... having said all of that, I, nor anyone else have ever seen one, so I don't think they exist. I think it's probable that they planned to complete assembly of some bodies for '88 (not re-VIN old ones) but they in the end decided not to. I'd imagine that's how all the auto parts store back in the day ended up with listings for '88s.

Just my two cents, which gets you very little these days! :yell:

That information is just a list compiled from another list compiled from another list compiled from another list compiled from another list compiled from another list compiled from another list of unknown origin.

If GM planned to build 1988 models why is there not information on them with the info I posted from GM?

All the confusion comes from the fact that most all auto data released by GM pertains to the calendar year. i.e. How many cars/truck sold in a particular calendar year, 1987, 1988. So when Jan 1, 1988 rolled over there were several hundred 1987 El Camino's still in Dealer Inventory. Eventually the vehicles were sold and reports as being sold in 1988, not that they were 1988 models which every one is assuming.

True story: When I was selling cars in 1961, I had a customer tell me that at the end of the year, the factory sent a truck to the dealerships, picked up all of the current year cars, refurbished them at the factory and returned them to the dealers as one year new vehicles! Perhaps that's what happen in 1987 to El Caminos!!!!

Well, I've heard the "420" story, and not from this site. I have no recollection of where I saw this info, but it said that 420 were sold (didn't say how many manufactured) as '88's in '88. Do I know whether it's true or not? No! Do I give a rat's petunia (unless I supposedly own one)? No. Sooo, unless one has been pawned off onto you, and you have the VIN proving '88, what's the REAL problem????:dontknow:

Here's where the "420" comes from: http://www.elcaminos.com/ec/ec_total.htm

This website has some of the best Elky info compiled in one spot (besides this one, of course), but it's not perfect. With that being said, I would love to know how to get in touch with Dan Carr, the author of the above mentioned site, and ask where he obtained his info.

As speculated by another post, I suspect it was more like annual sales figures, not model year production that generated those numbers. I recall walking into a Chevy dealer in Ringgold, Ga in 1982. On the showroom floor sat a brand new, never titled.....1977 El Camino. Seems they never sold it, and the owner didn't want to turn it back to GM, so there it sat. Don't know what happened to it, but it was interesting to see. I suspect a similar occurence for the so called '88 Elkies, assuming that the '88 numbers are actual sales figures. But until I can ask the author of that data, it's only personal speculation.

edit: Since I'm an insurance agent, I have access to several databases of VIN # info. You can specify the year, make and model of a vehicle, and the system will pull the VIN prefix for that particular vehicle. Just for kicks, I put in "88 El Camino" . Not surprising, it said "no match found". So, if someone does have an '88, they would have a very hard time finding auto insurance.

Not to fan the flames, but isn't the model year, as far as motor vehicle registries are concerned, based on when the vehicle was first registered? As a result, a surplus 87 sold in 88 would be registered as an 88? That's the story I heard at least. :dontknow:

This thread is like free entertainment....Area 51 and Bigfoot ???

Who really cares except Barrett-Jackson ?

Is it a 88 ? or 92 ? or 55 ? :dontknow:

What matters to most folks, is all the same....does it look good, feel good, put a
smile on your face, can you buy parts, and work on it, ???????

If after 20+ years since production stopped, the general concensus is that there are no 88`s......

I`m pretty sure Lee Harvey Oswald did it, even if we never know the "real truth"

I`m just sayin.

To clarify my question;
Built in Sept. to be sold as the next year model sound, feels, smells right. So I`m not
questioning what you`re saying HKDUP87.

I`m old enough to have seen the actual differences in the "1/2" year models in the 60`s and 70`s. (some were significant)

Not being familiar with the 86 or 87 differences (if there are any)....was your`s misrepresented?
