Hey guys! As some of you know, I recently picked up a Cron Vic crossmember and a 200-4R. I crawled under my El Camino and started thinking that this might be a bigger job than I thought. I just wanna make sure I have all my ducks in a row before I even loosen one bolt. Heres how I plan on doin this:

Part 1:
Remove exhaust
Remove/loosen all wires and lines attached to tranny
Remove driveshaft
Put jack under tranny and lift slightly
Remove tranny crossmember
Remove bellhousing bolts
Carefully lower tranny

Part 2:
Put 200-4R on jack and roll into place
Jack-up carefully into position
Attach bellhousing bolts
Install Crown Vic crossmember & bolt in
Reinstall driveshaft
Reinstall all wires and lines
Reinstall exhaust
Wait a few years until I can afford a lock-up control module
Vua-la!

Does the Crown Vic crossmember need to be fabbed any? It looks nothing like my old one. Its very hard to believe its gonna just be a direct bolt in. Thanks guys!

Part 1,, remove the converter bolts,, do not try to pull the tranny with the converter still bolted to the flex plate,, do a search on the vic cross member,, I would bet it wont just bolt in,, some mods sholud have to be made,, do you have a welder and cut off grinder?? The drive shafts are different lenghts,, and the speedo gear inside the tranny cant be changed without disassembling the entire trans,, Hopefully Tranny Mike can verify that,, so if it is set for a 3.73 gear and you run a 3.24 lets say your speedo will be off.. Matty man

You also need a jack under the engine when you pull the tranny. It MIGHT sit there on it's own, but the jack can help tip it up and down if it helps. Also PULL YOUR DISTRIBUTOR CAP OFF. The engine will often tip back and crack it or tweak the dist. shaft. It's tipping could also damage things like tranny cooler lines, maybe radiator bottom hose if it is short etc.

Don't forget to pick up new tranny fluid!

Good Luck!!!:smileyb:

O yea almost forgot about the torque converter lol. And ill check round on the Crown Vic crossmember

And theres nothin wrong with the ol TH350, I just want the OD lol

crown vic crossmember will not bolt in, keyser cut a couple inches off both sides and squished the ends together to make them flat and drilled mounting holes . Then you have to drill holes on the passenger side frame rail because the crown vic one goes straight across unlike stock which has the holes at an angle from each other. I believe the driveshaft length is the same and the driven gear for the speedo on the trans can be changed just by removing the little bullit on the side of the trans which should get you close enough

yes you will have to cut the CV cross member and re-flatten the ends. You will also need to grind the welds off the tranny support and relocate to where you need it as well as drilling you some new holes. I've done 4 now and am getting it down to a fairly quick operation.

I haven't done the Crown Vic crossmember conversion, but I do know matty man is correct about the speedo gears. If your inner speedo gear won't work with any outer gears available to get the speedometer to read correctly, you do need to do A COMPLETE TRANS TEAR DOWN! The inner gear is on the output shaft and there is no way to take it off and change it because the tailhousing doesn't come off, it's part of the case, and the output shaft is the last part to come out on a tear down.

Well my speedo is off by 15 mph the way it is... Im not too worried about that lol.

As for the crossmember, does anyone have a how-to with lots of pics? Id appreciate it!

And also, the guy I got it off of says its got high miles... Id love to rebuilt it myself but i dont wanna tear into it and... not be able to finish it. How hard is it for a beginner to rebuild a tranny? and how much does it usually cost?

I am using my 350 crossmember with a 200r4... I had a used 200r4 for a couple of years, just laying around not sure of its condition. My 350 was'nt sounding good ,took a chance and installed it... I had an extra crossmember for the 350 did some rough cuts ,so I could drive it round the block and test the 200r4... My trans runs strong but reverse got weak ,this hack job I did is temporary but, its worked for the last six months. Before I go to Belton ,I have to decide on rebuilt 350 back in, or get the aftermarket xmember. I really like my 200r4, on jack stands my wheels spin backwards, on the ground it won't go reverse anymore..:dontknow: ? http://s903.photobucket.com/albums/ac235/carr7640/80%20el%20camino/350%20crossmember%20with%20200r4%20trans/

I'm not quite sure I understand the situation. The 350 xmember is causing no reverse, and an aftermarket xmember for 200r4 will correct the "no reverse"? Between you, me, and the outhouse, if it comes to rebuilding the 350 or the 200, I'd rebuild the 200. Can't be that much difference in price.

My no reverse has nothing to do with the xmember.. That happened after I added a quart of b&m trans fluid...Im gonna either buy xmember and rebuild my 200r4 ,or rebuild my 350 trans .Shop will rebuild the 200 r for $800 or turbo 350 at $500 with me r&r ,plus add another couple hundred for xmember.

I know if you buy a rebuilt 200-4R its about a grand more than a 350 lol

With todays gas prices, you'll recoup that grand in a few months because of the overdrive. Looking at monster transmissions website, there only about $400 difference. Thats the one(200-4r) I bought and have had very good service.

Idk... I dont really have the cash to rebuild it right now. I think ill just put it in there for now and rebuild it later
